Legally speaking, marriage is a contract made in conjunction with the law, where a free man and a free woman reciprocally engage to live with each other.
Marriage is the legal union of a couple as spouses. Some basic elements of marriage are;
1•The parties legal ability to marry each other
2•Mutual consent of parties
3•A marriage contract as required by law.
Divorce is the process of terminating a marriage or marital union. Divorce usually entails the canceling or reorganising the legal duties and responsibilities of marriage, thus dissolving the bonds of matrimony between a married couple.
Let’s look at the basic effect of divorce, there are many effect of divorce in the north, but let’s pick the important ones which are;
1•Decreased level of happiness: The dissolution of their marriage, then, may come as something of a shock. They naturally regret and wish things will turn out differently and wish whether they would have done anything to prevent it. They hate everything and everyone before they accept it and move on.
2•Change income status: Women’s income has a positive and significant effect on divorce rates. However, the women’s income has negative moderating effects on the poverty-to-divorce rate effects. The women’s independence among the poor potentially drives the divorce rate. The poverty rate has bidirectional causality with women’s income and divorce rates. In addition, unidirectional causality exists from divorce rates to women’s income.
3•Emotional problem: For some, the common feelings of anger, resentment, confusion, fear, shame, and anxiety during and after divorce take up permanent residency in their emotional makeup and wreak havoc on both their mental and physical health. This can be the case even if they are the ones who chose to leave the marriage. And for women they always think of the society and parents will be treating them and the new life their children are going to face.
And the effect on the children include;
A. Academic problem:
Psychological homes conditions arise mainly from illegitimacy of children from a broken home (they either stay with the mother or the father) some abnormal conditions of the house are likely to have a detrimental effect on the school performance of the child.
B. Broken Home:
Broken home produce children deprived and denied of quality education, adequate parental care and consequently, must times turn out to be social deviants and delinquent with constitution of nuisance in the society as their major stock in tread. They usually lack one side love and care most especially the father’s side some Arewa fathers usually hate their children after divorcing their mother because of the hatred they developed on their mothers which is very unfortunate.
C. Behavioural problem:
Most of the children that their parents were separated have more difficulties with social adjustment and are more likely to report problems with friendships, and manifest behaviour problems; many develop a swaggering, intimidating persona in an attempt to disguise their underlying fears, resentments, anxieties, and unhappiness.
D. Psychological problem:
Separating children from parents can cause more than temporary stress. Kids from single-parent families are more likely to face emotional and behavioural health challenges, like aggression or engaging in high risk behaviours.
